Questions
A complete transit typically takes 8-10 hours from ocean to ocean. Your ship will pass through three sets of locks—Gatun, Pedro Miguel, and Miraflores—and cross Gatun Lake. Partial transits, which enter and then return, take about 4-6 hours total.
Full transit cruises sail completely through the canal from the Atlantic to Pacific (or vice versa), usually on repositioning voyages between coasts. Partial transits enter the canal, sail into Gatun Lake, then turn around and exit the same way, typically as part of Caribbean itineraries.
Most transits don't include shore time since you're actively sailing through. However, many itineraries include separate port calls in Colón or Panama City where you can disembark to visit the Miraflores Locks visitor center, explore rainforests, or tour historic sites.
Upper open decks near the bow or stern offer the best views of the lock operations and surrounding jungle. Many ships also provide narration on outdoor decks. Arrive early at the locks for prime viewing spots, as these areas get crowded during transits.
Panama Canal cruises operate year-round, but peak season runs September through April during Panama's dry season. January through March see the most sailings as ships reposition between Alaska and Caribbean seasons. Temperatures remain warm and humid throughout the year.
