Icon of the Seas in December — Mixed Feelings, But the People Made It Worth It

We sailed on the Icon of the Seas this past December, and overall, it ended up being a pretty mixed experience for us.

We're a couple in our 30s and booked this trip partly to relax and partly to try something new socially. Before the cruise, we actually connected with another couple through CruiseHuddle, and that ended up being the highlight of the whole trip. We met up the first night for drinks, and it felt easy right away—no awkwardness. Over the next few days, we had dinner together a couple of times, hung out, and there was definitely some light, playful flirting between all of us that made things more fun and a little different from a typical cruise.

The ship itself is massive and really impressive when you first get on. There's no shortage of things to see or places to go, but weirdly, it didn't always feel as lively as we expected.

A big reason for that was the weather. We were expecting warm, beachy vibes, but it was noticeably cooler than we hoped. Not terrible, just not ideal. The bigger issue was the water—it was cold enough that we really didn't want to spend time in the pools. That kind of took away one of the main things we usually enjoy on a cruise, and you could tell a lot of other people felt the same way.

Because of that, the days felt a little off. We ended up walking around more than actually settling in and relaxing anywhere.

Another downside was the entertainment. There were still shows and activities, but it felt like some of the usual cruise staples just weren't there or weren't as strong. We've been on other cruises where every night feels like there's something you have to go see, and this didn't quite hit that level.

Food was good overall, nothing to complain about, but not super memorable either. The best meals we had were honestly the ones we shared with the other couple—those nights stood out more because of the company than anything else.

Socially, it was interesting. Outside of the couple we met beforehand, we didn't really connect with anyone else. Most people stayed in their own groups, so having that pre-planned connection made a big difference. Without it, the trip probably would've felt pretty quiet for us.

By the end, we both agreed that we didn't love the cruise itself, but we still had a good time because of who we met. If the weather had been warmer and the water more inviting, it might've been a completely different experience.

We'd consider doing Icon again, but probably not in December—and we'd definitely try to connect with people ahead of time again, because that ended up being the best part of the trip.
